I could never understand the mentality of collecting barbed wire ... but lots of folks enjoy doing it as their hobby of choice ... and who is to say they are wrong??
Some folks enjoy collecting chips from only properties they have actually visited as an inexpensive souvenir to take home and show their friends and family. I don't know of too many hobbies where one can get 100% of their purchase price at face value back when they tire of it. Many U.S. proof and mint sets that were purchased by coin collectors from the U.S. Mint can not be redeemed at purchase price ... while other sets have appreciated.
If you are looking for investments, my advice is to stick with Wall Street. If you are looking for a FUN hobby with lots of comaradie ... then chip collecting might be for you. If after several years of collecting, some chips become worth more than you paid for them ... you're ahead of the game. Collect modern day chips for your personal enjoyment, not for speculation or investment. When you get your feet wet, perhaps going after the more valuable obsolete chips might be to your liking.
