Yep, I remember that one Barry. I sure wish I was able to say that was the only time I had chip disappear into the twilight zone. It's happened a few times.
I've had chips arrive damaged that I've sent as well as received. In my opinion, all honorable chippers will replace chips. It's unfortunate that this stuff happens, but it does. It' also will go both ways...sometimes you have to cover the costs, sometimes the other person does.
What I hate is when a chip doesn't arrive and I don't have another to send as a replacement.
Damage is a touchy issue. One could take the defense that the package was protected well enough, and shipped in the standard accepted way of chipping. Even though the bubble mailer is pretty much the accepted medium to send chips, the bottom line is that if the sender had protected the chip well enough, it would have arrived in one piece and undamaged. It's a craps shoot.
Certainly, the post office has been known to be overly rough at times, maybe even running a package over with the truck before running through a shreader. Still, it is the sender's job to send the chip protected properly. If a chip I send arrives damaged, it is my responsibility, and I will replace the chip.
On the insurance note, I personally feel that once the package insured for any amount, the post office will not only keep it under lock and key, but will handle it more carefully. I don't think insurance needs to be full value.
On the disappearing chip topic, I had another one happen recently. I feel that this has become a much more frequent event. I have heard from a number of people that they have seen this happening more often. I'd like to know where all these chips end up!
Just my take on it.
