I assumed the prices were comparable to obvious rarity issues. I would think the possibility of finding expensive cards inside would be huge. Imagine a 1952 pack with a possibly Mickey Mantle inside. I'm not sure I could keep from opening it. Of course I would hate to pay thousands on an opened pack and find nothing but commons.
I remember in my wasted youth days of collecting baseball cards in the early 80s (I could have gathered all the old Vegas chips for nothing) that there was one shop who sold unopened packs of 1974 Topps for $7 apiece. I would always buy a couple of packs and open them right there. The owner got so upset everytime, but the suspense was too much. Not that there was anything special in the 1974.
Of course the most fun was getting my sister to eat the 8 year old gum. It would turn to powder in her mouth and tasted just awful.
