When I have tipped beforehand: Hard Rock Tampa had just opened. I needed to buy alot of chips for everyone that wanted them. So I waited for the line to clear. Once no one was at the cage I walked over and placed $5 on the counter and said that it was for her. She looked at me strange and then I told her I had a large request. I then gave her my chip order which was $175 dollars in chips which was everything from .25 cent chips all the way thru. She was extremely helpful and I was in and out in less then a couple of minutes.
Tipping after the fact: MGM Grand, I was looking for $1 chips in new condition. The cashier was very helpful, digging thru the chips she had and at one point going to the safe/vault to get brand new ones. Because of the extra work, which I was very appreciative to have received, tipping was in order.
No tipping required: When I go to the cage and ask for a $1 chip where no digging, no extra work, any condition etc. doesnt matter. Hand them a $1 bill, ask for a $1 chip...and off I go.
