They have to stop the money hemorrhage somehow. They can't continue to operate plants that lose money and hope to stay viable as a business.

You don't have to like it, but the moves being made are an attempt to keep the company in business period. If they don't make these moves, the company goes out of business. The jobs lost would be ten-fold over what outsourcing and foreign manufacturing have caused. It really is pretty simple.
