Its not illegal, but agency policy differs. Here i will downgrade to code 1(no lights or siren) through a school zone(during school hours) and over bridges then upgrade back to code 3(light siren) when safe to do so. However if your not justified in your actions your going to pay if someone gets hurt. If your reckless and hurt someone criminal charges can come. Some law enforcement officers in Florida recently got charged after a death that occurred during a pursuit. Im not shure what Fire/Rescue's law or policy is, but in our agency we dont pursue unless involved in a dangerous felony. Ive been code 3 to hot calls and in many pursuits. Over the years ive come to hate doing both cus of the high liability. Alot of newer deputies go pretty fast to some calls and i tell em if you dont make it there yourself you wont be any help.
