I passed through Charlotte going to and returning from Costa Rica 2 months ago. I was very surprised at the size of the facility and the abundance of amenities. I think you will find it to be a comfortable place for your 5-hour layover. As I recall they do have smoking areas in or adjacent to the bars in the terminal. I was only between flights for little over an hour so I can't expound on the shopping and other things to do there.
