From Wikipedia:
Panguingue (also known as Pan) is a gambling card game similar to rummy. It is particularly popular in Las Vegas and other casinos in the American southwest.
[I don't know how old this assessment is, but it is NOT a popular casino game in Las Vegas. The only place in town that still spreads this game is the Plaza. Mr. Gaughan used to play Pan there daily. As recently as last week I spoke with a dealer at the Plaza and he said that although Pan is still spread there, it is not spread every day and that Jackie Gaughan rarely plays there anymore (remember he doesn't own the joint anymore).]
The game is played using a 320-card deck, contstructed from eight decks of playing cards, removing all eights, nines, tens, and Jokers.
If you are interested, Pan can be played (for fun or for real money) on Superior Poker.com or Tiger Gaming.com.
I learned to play Pan a little over a year ago and (not so) regularly play it in a home game. I know that several of our poker players at the Palms also play Pan in various home games. The conventional wisdom is that this is a game played by older Jewish women. I'm neither Jewish nor a woman, but I have come to love the game. It is perhaps the only game where the antics of the players make poker players look like girl scouts at a bake sale in comparison.
Interestingly enough, cheating (disposing of a card by tossing it under the table) is not a capital offense....as long as you get away with it. If someone "counts you down" you're busted and you have to pay back everything that has been paid to you during that hand as well as continue paying other players until someone "goes out".
There are Vallee Cards, Conditions, Drop Outs and you can be Flat. It's a great game.
