I participate in many clubs from cars to turtles and it is nothing like this. Some of the clubs have kids (oops young people) and I am consistently amazed by them.

The problem is that while the club has grown, the mentality of some has not. The pretend to welcome new members but in reality they just want them to pay thier dues and drink the Kool-Aid.
