I can attest, it works good, but SLOW. I've been doing it on occasion for a couple years. One thing I've learned lately though is that it is fairly easy to find a free wireless access point in any business area. My son and I drove around downtown a few weeks back and were able to get free internet access just about every block from one business or another.
