I've always liked the term "edge spots", rather than "inserts". It's more general and can be applied to any of the modern chip making methods as well as to the older ones where someone actually did "insert" some bits of clay into the mold to mark the edges. Even works for brass core chips, the ones that Howdy christened PMSC.
