I have always used Norton (systemworks, Antivirus, Personal Firewall or Internet Security, and Utilities. I always buy the new version on CD, because I have YET to pay anything for the software. You can ALWAYS find enough rebates to end up getting the new software free each year when the subscription is paid up. plus I like to have software on CD's anyway, in case I need to reload.
I cannot give a 100% glowing review of NAV or other products though, but *sigh* we still use it on all three computers on our home network.
I really, REALLY hate how crappy Symantec is at cleaning off old versions of the software, because in the few times I have had problems, the "remove and reinstall" option has often had to be used, and since their incredibly woefully inadequate "remove" option software does not do the job worth a D@mn!!!! *fume* (for crissake, I work in the software industry, and would be out of a job if I wrote uninstall software that did performed like Symantecs does...but don't get me started ;) ).
Other than that, I think they do a great job with updates and (for the most part) keeping abreast of the buggies in the inet.
Keep in mind, however, that I have ALWAYS used Symantec/Norton AV and internet firewalls, so perhaps some of my recommendation is due to familiarity.
I have heard there is freeware firewalls and antiviruses out there that work "just as well", but have not yet been motivated to try something when I know Norton works. *shrug*
If they keep pissing me off with the little problems though, perhaps someday I will change.
Sorry to blab so much. I love them, but I hate them. *LOL*
I wouldn't worry about the memory hogginess or speed - with your hardware it should be a non-issue, as it is with mine.
