I’m looking to buy a playing set of poker chips. What I call a mid-level set. I don’t want a custom set yet, and I’m getting tired of the mostly plastic diamond mold chips I’ve been using for the past 5 years. I’m looking for a set of 500 chips in three colors with denominations hot-stamped both sides. My budget is $150 for the set.

Here are my questions:

#1 What colors? I was thinking of white, red, & blue. (I’m a traditional bunny.) But white chips tend to get crappy looking pretty fast. My next thought was red, blue, & yellow. Or, as the last color will be for $1 chips, red, blue, & green. What colors do you suggest and why?

#2 Is my budget realistic? One of these days I’m going to have a set of 1000 custom chips made. Really do it right. Not yet though.

#3 Can you suggest a source? I’ve been looking at the stuff Mike Finnetti has on ebay. I’ve also looked at Atlantic Standard Mouldings. Leaning toward Mike for the chips I want now & to ASM for a custom set in the future.
