Just to make sure that the design of my web pages doesn't exceed in width what the majority of people are using.

Scrolling down is ok, but people don't like to scroll sideways. Used to be most people designed for 640x480, for the last few years the standard has been 800x600. It is obvious by the responses I've gotten that 1024x768 is the new baseline.
