Anyone know if lead was used in older chips (ca 1950s)?

I found a copy of an old manufacturers "secret recipe" for something...I think it's chip resin since it includes clay. It also had a lot of white lead in it. If it's what I think it is, then there may be enough lead in the older chips to be a concern.
