Very true Fred ... silver strikes are .999 silver; but fineness is only one part of the equation. The primary consideration should be how much silver do they contain in weight. Only the center of the strikes are .999 fine silver. The outter ring composition is brass.
It is my understanding that a $10 silver strike contains about .6 ounces of .999 fine silver; so re-do the math at today's current price levels ... and I believe that price is for refined fabricated silver ingots, not for silver "scrap".
I'm not dissing silver strike collecting. They certainly do have a store of value based on their silver content. If you're planning on accumulating silver strikes with anticipation of future upward silver price fluctuations ... then you are not collecting, but speculating (in my opinion) and there's nothing wrong with that per se.
Enjoy what you like to collect. If there is a financial bonus to be had at the end of your collecting days ... so much the better.
