When I meant "our" system of laws, I meant ours as a nation. In my copy of "A History of American Law" Dr, Friedman clearly states that the notion that the law of the colonies was basically English common-law is false, just as the often argued (by some) theory that colonial law was based on the Bible. Elements from both are plainly used, and, in my view, this is now the common held belief.
In any case, my point was you are free to have any belief you please. You will run into conflict with our "laws" if your actions on behalf of these belefs are in conflict with the law.
