The doctrine of Manifest Destiny, simply was a formal position of the United States, that outlined our belief that we had a legal right, under international law(as it existed), to extend our boandaries to the Pacific coast. THis doctrine did recognize any current ownership rights, and referred only to those areas that were regarded as unclaimed territory.
