A few people you’ll meet in chipping
Below I have described only a few of the people you might meet in the world of chipping. This is by no means a complete list. There are many, many more.
The ‘Collector’
He collects ‘EVERYTHING’. Antique cars, shaving mugs, Zippo lighters, WWII memorabilia, steam powered tractors, ‘EVERYTHING’. Oh yeah, I almost forgot, chips, too (& dice & slot cards & ash trays, & slot machines). His goal in life is to have all of everything collectable, including chips.
The Chipper
He loves chips. There are not enough chips on tha planet to sate his desire. He collects, house chips, LE’s, NCV’s, roulettes, illegals, promotional chips, fantasy chips, sample chips, drilled, notched, or cancelled, he wants them all. Every variety, every color, every size, every country, he wants them all. Clay, plastic, ivory, jetons, plaques, H&C, LCV, RHC, Chipco, Bud Jones, Langworthy, HE WANTS THEM ALL! He does not place a dollar value on his collection, every chip is priceless.
The Investment Chipper
He collects chips as art objects with value and profit potential. He likes to buy low and watch his investment appreciate, but never wants to sell. He keeps detailed records of ‘price paid’ vs. ‘current value’ to track how well his collection is doing. At any moment he can tell you the current market value of his collection within $10.
The Hard Rock Collector
Anxiously anticipating the next release.
The Collector/Dealer
Not to be confused with the ‘Collector’ or the ‘Dealer’. This is the Chipper who has been totally consumed by the hobby. His collection has grown so large, and he has been trading and selling so many chips, that he has given up his day job to concentrate all his energy on chipping. He buys and sells to support his wife and his hobby, but he never gouges on prices or misrepresents his product.
The ‘Dealer’
His only mission in life is to make a profit. He couldn’t care less about the beauty or history of the chips he buys and sells, they are a money making ‘product’. He has no friends or ‘fellow chippers’, to him everyone is either a customer or a potential customer. He considers counterfeit chips, repaired chips, and ignorant ‘newbies’ to be ‘profit potential’. His moto: “Shipping and handling fees are where the real profit is at!”
This is not the only type of ‘Dealer’, there are at least a dozen other ‘types’ ranging from very good to very bad.
This is only a preliminary list. There are several more ‘types’ that I know of, but have left out, because I did not want to risk offending anyone (I’ve done enough of that already). If you can think of how to describe these people in a gentle, unoffensive manner, please do so. If anyone knows of any other type of person you will meet in chipping, please contribute. Let’s see how complete we can make the list. :-)
