I have noticed that many companies have layoffs between Thanksgiving and Christmas. The only reason that I can think of to do that is that their new fiscal year is going to start in January and they are cutting the budget. That sure doesn't help those laid off though. On the other hand at least they didn't wait until after Christmas when the employees spent tons of money on Christmas presents and charged it all on the credit card. There is never a good time for a layoff.
