While I'm no computer expert, I have had more problems than I expected when dealing with both Windows updates and Norton Internet Security. Sometimes it seems that the Windows service packs are beta versions rather than tested programs, and Norton's security programs, other than their anti-virus programs aren't current even when downloaded from their website. I had major problems with Norton Internet Security when I downloaded it onto one of my machines after I switched to DSL from dial-up.
These days, I'm still using Norton anti-virus for email, but I'm using McAfee for the rest, and I won't download any Windows updates. The updates always seem to turn too many switches to different settings that are hard to find.
