Hi All.....Believe it or not, this happened to me. I ran into a friend of mine who is a serious antiques collector at a party in July. I mentioned to him that I had started collecting casino chips. He beats the bushes around here (North East), and had NO interest in casino collectibles. I looked around at a few flea markets, tag sales, etc, but I NEVER turn up anything decent from Vegas (or much elsewhere , for that matter).
He saw some Vegas chips at a garage sale last week. He was not interested, but he told the seller about me, took her telephone number and gave it to me. I spoke to the seller two days ago. This person was clueless. She was an older woman. She had 4 chips that belonged to her deceased husband. He kept them as souveniers from a Vegas trip in the 50's. She described the first two, and I told her if they were accurate descriptions, I would give her $100 for the chips. The book value was about $175. She described the third, and I told her that I had it already. I told her that, if she liked, I would take it and sell it on eBay for her and give her what it got minus the eBay fees and shipping. I genuinely wanted to help her. She said "Oh honey that isin't necessary, you are so nice, tell you what, I will just send you all four for the $100. "All four?", I said......."What is the fourth one?" I bet you can guess where this is heading.
If I am correct, the 4th chip is worth well over $1000.00, and I am pretty sure I am correct. Now my first impulse was to shut up, take the chip and live happily ever after. My wife, who I am sure is on the express train to the Pearly Gates when she goes, told me to shut up, take the chips and live happily ever after.
I do feel guilt though. In my heart, I never tried to do anything tricky or devious. Anyone want to offer me some guidance? Ever been in a similar situation? Is this just my good luck or am I under some sort of obligation here? My friend is going there tomorrow to pick up the chips.......
