Yes, Charles -- For his neat book about USPC chips Howdy Herz photographed each page of the 23 bound books of chip samples. The books were in the USPC's Museum of Playing Cards. It covered the period from about 1908 to the 1940's. I visited the museum about 10 years ago and saw the books. The chips had those little holes and were threaded to the pages. As I recall, they were large volumes with pages about 12" x 11." I believe they used the hole/thread technique for a number of purposes -- salesmens sample books, attached to chip boxes perhaps.
