The Borland collectors will know that, via his manufacturing records, Jim Blanchard recently proved how to distinguish the commemorative chips Borland re-ordered. As a reminder, Borland re-ordered on 5 casinos, the El Rancho, Mint, Pussycat, Silver Slipper and Thunderbird. The original orders were as follows:
$1 - 3/8" inserts
$5 - 1/2" inserts
$25 - 9/16" inserts
$100 - 5/8" inserts
$500 - 3/8" inserts
$1000 - 1/4 pie
$5000 - 1/2 pie
The reorders for all 7 denoms were with 1/2" inserts (yes I know my article needs updating)
So this leads me to the question 'How can one distinguish the $5 values if they both had 1/2" inserts?'
I had previously noted minor color variations (as always happens) and an apparent variation in weight. I thought this had no consequence until I spent some time discussing it with Jim last week. It appears that Atlantic Standard were making no money by supplying Borland at 39c a chip, so, rather than increase the price, they lowered their production costs by reducing or removing the 'brass flecks' from the compound, resulting in a slight lightening in color and reduction in weight of over 1 gram.
The Silver Slipper was the first I picked up and could see this difference straight away. Im now going through quantities of the other 4 chips.
