that people quote parts of speeches, texts, etc all of the time. They use the part that expresses something they want to convey. Nothing in the original speech was "changed." I don't even think the meaning of the original speech was changed (jmho). Was that the only sentence he said that day? I doubt it. I also doubt that the people who made and commissioned the statue were intending for this to be a historical record of Roosevelt's speech, only a tribute to those who risked their life in a terrible confict. This just seems like someone is really grasping for something to make a cause around. Why can't people just appreciate the sentiment behind the tribute?
