I'll bet the stories he can tell are mesmerizing, I know I'd love to talk with him. I find talking to the sports heroes of the past to be very fascinating. I've known a few and they have so much to contribute.
I had a great experience my first year of coaching in 1970 and the gentleman was from Northwestern. I assisted Don Burson who was an All American quarterback from Northwestern who helped defeat the Cal Bears in the 1948-49 Rose Bowl. Boy he had stories and knowledge of sports that I sucked up like a sponge, great guy. He did live long enough to see Northwestern return to the Rose Bowl in 1995/96. One thing I learned from him that helped me all through my coaching career was to leave the officials alone, do not publicly try to berate them. Beyond all the philosophical reasons he said it was easier to play against eleven than fifteen.
