I think the slabbing of common chips would be a detriment to the hobby. I like the way the ancient coin market handled the issue of certification. The leading expert, Mr. Sears, takes a close up high resolution photo of both sides of the coin and puts the photo's into a certification that is carried with the coin while not encapsulating it. The photos are detailed enough to clearly show the that the coin examined is the one being sold with the certification. This would mean the chips would stay out of slabs and still carry a certification of rarity, pedigree, condition and whether repaired or cleaned.
