Growing up in Connecticut as a Red Sox fan, my family, like the other Red Sox Nation families, experienced the annual agony known as baseball season. Each successive season (42 of them for me) of not winning the World Series was painful and "wait till next year" offers no protection against the relentless barbs from my Yankee fan friends.
No matter what happened, though, my father, ALWAYS said "Keep the Faith, the Sox will win and we will all experience it together". At 78 he too, never lost faith but with each passing year, I must admit I had my doubts.
Last year, the come back against the Yankees was the greatest comeback in the history of baseball. And, despite the Yankees insurmountable advantage in WS championships that comeback seemed to level the playing field and give us some "bragging rights at the pub".
Additionally, I had never been to a Red Sox playoff game, but after all the years and pain, I was able to be there with my brother in St Louis at Game 4 of the 2004 World Series. One playoff game in my life and it just happens to be "The Game"! How lucky am I.
We used my cell phone to have a conference call going with my younger brother and my father and mother during the bottom of the ninth inning so we could do our best to have them there, with us, to experience it together................... just as my father always promised.
Never imagined hearing a parent say, "I told you so" could be so joyous!
