Around 1980 I attended a Red Sox and Yankees game at Fenway Park and sat in the second row, 3rd baseline, right behind GEORGE. Across the isle from him was a family of four. Father, Mother and two teenage children. They all wore Red Sox jackets.
Throughout the first few innings, fans kept coming to GEORGE for his autograph.???? Thru eye contact only I looked at the father of the family and we agreed, "Who would want his autograph"
Well about the fifth inning they positioned an usher next to me to prevent further interuptions of GEORGE. Even I can understand that.
One inning later, my friend with the Red Sox jacket passed a program to GEORGE and asked for his autograph. I was pissed, what a traitor, As I looked over GEORGE'S shoulder he ask my x friend his name, who replied Tom.
I watch him write on his program."Best of Luck, The Yankees, George Steinbrener. and passed the program back to my X friend Tom.
About this time I say outloud "I wish I had one of those" and as GEORGE turned around to look at me to receive something to require his autograph, I replied
"SO I COULD BURN IT, IN FRONT OF MY FRIENDS WHO ARE YANKEE FANS."
And that's my claim to fame with "GEORGE"
I write this because of the great baseball stories posted much lower on the Message Board
