There are three traveling salesman. They work too late to drive home and have to spend a night at a motel. The motel room costs $30 and they each chip in $10. Later the motel clerk realizes that he made a mistake and the room was only $25. So he sends the bell hop over to the room with $5. Now the bell hop knows that the three guys in the room can't evenly split the $5 so he decides to keep $2 for himself and gives them $3 to split up, that being $1 each.

They started with $30. The salesmen paid $27 ($9 x 3) and the bell hop kept $2. $27 plus $2 is $29. What happened to the extra $1?
