In the example I cited, shill bidding had no effect ---- for me. However, the poor bidder, who is not not very knowledgable, feels he is protected by the nature of an honest auction. If he is bidding against shills, he is screwed.
Now some may feel caveat emptor. I feel bad for the guy.
