Russell, I was on Guam 1963/64 with USAF at Anderson AFB. Lots of memories, some not too bad...
I'll never forget when they opened the door at the Anderson terminal and the heat/humidity rushed in.
In 1963 we went through Typhoon Karen. I really sympathize with people living in hurricane country. I’ll take the occasional earthquakes here.
Bob Hope did a Christmas show in 1963...very, very funny. One remark he made when he got off the plane was that it was nice to be back in Hawaii.
We flew to Tokyo for a week while the 1964 Olympics were there and dropped off some mail and movies at Iwo Jima. Now that's a post.
The military disciplinary barracks was run by the Marines near Aguana...that kept me out of trouble as I just didn't want to be put in a marine brig.
They said the base commander was the B-52 pilot that had dropped the atomic bomb off Spain. I knew why he was on Guam, why was I there?
There was a tradition that when you rotated back you took some rocks with you. The thought was that eventually Guam would disappear.
