But the auction in question is the subject of the thread. I agree that anyone that take an ivory chip and alters it to make money is a greedy SOB and so is the collector (if he knows its been altered)
However, chips altered in the 1800s or turn of the century were not altered to make money from ivory collectors. They are works of art with a value of what the market will bear. I have one such chip (Robert E Lee). All the top collectors have them. Except for yourself, all, and I mean all, top ivory collectors highly value these chips -----not the ones altered recently but those altered way back.
You may not agree, but EVERYONE else does.
Now let's get on the case of those Borland collectors. Talk about fakes.
