Aaron, the inserts are not "painted" on the chip surface. There are actual notches in the chips where the inserts are "plugged into" on clay chips prior to being impressed by the mold. If you will experiment and cut through an inexpensive Paulson chip that has edge inserts, you'll note that the colors go all the way through the chip.
