It is the same, because we tried this in the past. WE locked up Germans not once but twice in thelast century (One of my Great Grandparents siblings was held because she had a German name. The fact that her German ancesters had been in the US since before the American Revolution (and she was a member of the DAR) not withstanding.
We herded the Japanese into camps, because of the War. WE killed off overwhelming majority of the native americans in a "war". Hitler did what he did because of a "war". There are horrendous consequences from the position you cited.
And for the record, the international community, led by the United States has said repeatedly, there are some things you don't do to win a war, period, just because they are wrong period.
And it would clarify the debate significantly, if the Government would settle on whether this is a war (no formal declaration) or the handling of criminals. The government keeps getting burned because they claim the benefits under both theories, and reject the consequesnce of both theories.
I believe in fighting Evil, I don't believe in becoming the Evil.
