After talking to/interviewing mostly relatives of people involved in illegal clubs in Kentucky, West Virginia and Pennsylvania, I have learned not to challenge their thoughts about what they remember. Often they give false information, either because they don't know or they don't want to admit to past acts, but I just let them talk and often get information that they would not offer if questioned about the validity of something said.
I also agree that it's important to get the guidelines up front. Talking off the record is OK with me and I will always honor that, but usually people loosen up and want to tell their story.
