John has given you some good guide lines.
If you read my Arrowhead Inn articles, there is a lot of info there that was originally off limits to print. I finally got the OK for much of it by explaining the story would be enriched if I could print it. It took hours to get the family's respect and I would not tell it in a way that would be dis-respectful.
Most just love to rattle off their familys history. Others want to get to know you before they talk.
I once talked to a 22 year old grandaughter in Terra Haute, IN. Her 1st words were "My grand daddy was a god fearing man and would NEVER had done anything like that." I looked down at his 18 year arrest record in my folder and knew I was drawing dead on this one. I said thank you and moved on.
A Texas man once said he NEVER bought chips for an illegal club. I had the delivery records in my hand and a newspaper article of his arrest. Same name, same address, right age, I gave up on this one also.
