"You may already know about this but when you flight was cancelled (in the middle of your trip) you can due what is called a Rule 240. When this happens you can give your ticket to any airline and they will honor it. It happened to me once were my airline told me that there were absolutely no flights out that night. I took my ticket to another airline and not only did I get home but I was in first class."

You used to be able to do that (rule 240) but I recall seeing on one of the cable news channels a couple months ago that that's no longer the case. I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure the FAA made a change in regards to it.
