Roy,
I've never seen the need for it in Las Vegas. I've heard that when AC first opened and the casinos were packed with patrons that when someone left the table for a bathroom break, the seat would only be held for ten minutes and then it would be given to the next person waiting. Supposedly, there were lines of people waiting for seats.
I don't know what the riverboats are like today, but I went on the Empress in Joliet shortly after it opened. The 21 tables filled up very fast and there was no way to get a seat. Poor little me, I was forced to play craps.
When Caribbean Stud was first introduced in Las Vegas, Bally's had two or three tables and they actually had a waiting list. The floorman took your name and out it on a list on a big clipboard and when a seat opened, he would call your name. Kind of like a maitre d.
