Hot August Nights is a great event if you are a car buff. The number great cars running around town is truly impressive. I go every year since I love cars and of course I love any chip with a car on it. I agree with you about the derth of Mopars on HAN chips.. I have a 69 Charger R/T SE in the garage.. but Chevy's and Fords are more marketable. Be sure to get lots of extras for traders as not everyone can make it to Reno and these are great traders. Take some chip tubes to store them in as you will be picking up lots of great chips and you will want to keep them from rattling around too much. Here is what I remember from my annual pilgrimage to gather HAN chips.
Bonanza.. They usually are the first casino to release thier Han chips.. often a month or more in advance.. and produce quantities in the thousands so there are enough for everyone to get as many as they want. No sales from the cage but they have $1 Blackjack and you usually have no problem getting a seat at a table where you can quickly accumulate the number of chips you want to take home. You will also find plenty of issues on the table from the prior 2 years.. just be sure to check condition of these before putting them in your pocket as some of them have seen heavy use and the inlays are starting to lift.
Harrahs.. They usually release their HAN chips a few days to a week before the event. Very chipper friendly at the cages and they don't even blink if you want to buy $100 worth. Sufficient quantities are released to satisfy the huge demand. Be sure to ask the friendly cage personnel for prior year issues as they usually have HAN chips from several prior years in stock and you can fill in your collection and add to your trader list this way.
Peppermill.. They keep plenty of stock at the main cage and provide friendly service. They sometimes place limits on how many you can buy (I think 5 chips) so take friends and relatives with you if you need more. Be sure to ask them if they have any other HAN chips in the vault as I have scored some great older issues this way, including 5 of the purple Corvettes one time.
Hilton.. Friendly cage personnel but the tightest restrictions on HAN chips of all the casinos. They generally will not release any chips until the event actually starts and then they limit each person to 2 chips of each denomination, so you will need to take lots of friends and relatives to stand in line with you at this one or visit on different shifts. They usually produce about 900-1000 $5 chips and these always sell out before the week is over, so get there early. They also are the only casino to currently produce a $25 chip.. this one was tough in the days when they did LE issues of 100 but there are more than enough produced now. You may be able to pick up some of the earlier issues of the $25 chips at the cage also.
Atlantis.. Always try the cage first. I have had it go both ways at this casino.. sometimes they will sell you plenty of chips from the cage, sometimes they make you go to the tables to get your chips. There are plenty of prior year chips available at this casino.. you can usually find just about all of them except the elusive 97.
Caesars Tahoe.. If you happen to be in Tahoe you might want to stop by here. They no longer issue HAN chips but there are usually some of their prior year $5 & $25 chips in the cage or floating around on the tables.
Have fun and who knows, maybe we will run into each other in line at one of those cages.
