I haven't been in a couple of years. (but it's on the list of things to do)
Someone just went through Elko a couple of weeks ago and wrote a message on the BB about checking for chips. I got the impression that Stockmen's was still open.
Here's what I think I know.
Stockmen's, Commercial Elko and Scoreboard in Spring Creek. Were owned by the same Corp. Full House Inc.
Now HHG Casinos. Red Garter, Stockmen's, Commercial, Scorecard. (it says Scorecard on the HHG website, maybe an error?)
Red Lion, Gold Country, Red Lion Wendover, (& High Desert Inn Elko, probably more) owned by same owner/Corp. McClaskey Holdings. Look for Casino Express Airline for the best deal you'll ever get on a three night casino visit including the flight. I couldn't get a room alone, for the same price.
All open and operating. Commercial had a restaurant fire, closed for remodeling and removed all table games. About the same time, a year ago, Gold Country decided to remove their 21 tables.
Stockmen's casino has been owned by various people and groups, just like the Commercial Hotel, and they haven't changed the name since the 40's, maybe even earlier.
For anyone who cares... Red Lion Motor Inn was renamed Gold Country when the new Red Lion Casino opened. Any chips saying Red Lion Motor Inn are from the old casino and are buried under Gold Country's new addition.
They are directly across the street (a highway actually) from each other. If you want to see Yield for Pedestrian enforced, be astonished in Elko. You step near the curb and traffic stops dead.
I found all the casinos friendly and fun.
Only poker room, back then, was at the Red Lion and there were local regulars who probably made a living taking the tourists to the cleaners. Separated from the casino, by windows, non-smoking, sign up to play. Pretty smooth. 7 card stud and Texas Holdem games were running last time I was there.
Old Full House Stockmen's website is "broken". You'll find text, but all images are gone.
