I certainly don't think there was any conspiracy to withhold the format of the tournament. I've never played in the tournament myself, but personally I'd much RATHER it be no limit and always assumed it was.

In my opinion, one of the primary purposes of the tournament is to have some fun with your fellow chip collectors. I think the limit format allows players of all different skill levels to play together longer and thus enjoy each other's company longer.
