I recently responded to a poster about transporting chips/collections etc. My opinion was that in protecting one's investment, a secure means of transport was wise. The flat style chip cases, typically found on eBay for poker chips, are in my opinion fine for non collectable poker game chips. However, for collections/trading chips, I stressed the importance of a secure case with heavy latches and handles. I even shared a first hand horror story about a fellow collector who was transporting chips in a flat aluminum case when one of the latches failed, spilling 100's of chips on the ground.
I found these smaller cases on eBay and I have one similar for trade chips. They're not cheap, but they do have the heavy retractable handle on top with the heavy latch. You can bang these around and with adequate padding inside, your chips will remain safe. Just a heads up for newbies wishing to protect their investments.
Here's the link and I have no interest whatsoever in this auction.

Note: You would have to design your own method of storing them inside the box.
