We own a couple of rental houses in San Antonio. They are both approximately 1300 sq. ft., in excellent areas, and rent for $950-1000 plus move in costs. The same house in Los Angeles rents for $2500-3000. Apartments are considerably less. Costs must vary according to location.

Texas does not have a state tax. I am not sure about other living expenses, but have found them to be comparable to what we pay here in Los Angeles.
