TOKYO POLICE SQUEEZE 'JUICE' FROM RED LIGHT DISTRICT
Tokyo police have shut down an illegal casino that had pulled down an estimated 3 billion yen (US$27 million) in six months of operation.
More than 70 people were arrested in the raid on the casino, called Juice, located in the red light Kabukicho district of the capital city. Thirty-two of those hauled in were employees of the casino, including the alleged operator, a 27-year-old Tokyo resident. Another 40 were patrons, among them 25 foreigners, according to a news report.
Police also seized 9.5 million yen in cash ($85,500), they said, and seven gambling tables.
Juice opened last November and is believed to have been one of Tokyo's largest underground gambling dens.
It is reported to have been a 24-hour operation protected by a double-door entry system, automatic locks and TV monitors. It was run as a members-only club and attracted some 200 gamblers a day and 20 million yen in daily handle.
