Better yet, go get a digital camera that does macro focus. You can take pictures on vacations, photos of the family, pets, whatever, and oh yes, even chips!
The $99 for a scanner that someone quoted is for a pretty darn good scanner. I bet you can find a cheap one that will work, for less. I've seen them for under half that, and they work fine. In fact I spent more to fill my gas tank, last Saturday, than it costs for a scanner.
But here's another easy solution. Just email the person who you are borrowing the scan from, and ask. I've never refused anyone and as long as you are hosting the picture yourself or uploading it to here or eBay, I don't know anyone (there might be someone) who has ever said, "No you can't use my scan", when asked.
