Re: Chip Cleaning Question
In Response To: Chip Cleaning Question ()

Sorry to hear about your experience with the hotstamp Anthony. I've never used Sterling Magic. I do believe in cleaning my chips and I ALWAYS urge folks to be very very careful of hotstamp chips. My last cleaning project was a prized $100 valued chip. It was worth it because I had believed the guides were wrong about mold type... turned out it actually was a Christy & Jones but was so grimey, it looked like an early Paulson, anyhoo...

I like to use Armor All Multi-Purpose Auto Cleaner or you might try Simple Green, it's not as aggressive. Wet the end of a Q-tip with the cleaner but not to the point where drops of cleaner form. With a bright light and steady hand begin gently rubbing at the surface of the chip. Contain any spread of cleaner on the chip surface with a dry Q-tip. Work small areas and KEEP THE CLEANER OUT of any hotstamping. When drying the chip surface with the Q-tip or a paper towel, just DAB at it, don't rub! It's tedious for sure but can be pretty satisfying when you get done. Another point is that when you have gone over the chip once you may perceive the cleaning job to be blotchy or more thorough in different areas. RESIST the urge to keep cleaning and let the chip air dry for a day or two, you may find your cleaning job will look better after the chips sits for awhile.

I consider myself to be a caretaker for these historical artifacts and I hate to ruin these little guys! vbg Good luck!
