A number of the current crop of digital cameras have macro capability that allow you to fill the frame with a subject the size of a chip. I use the Olympus 770, primarily a zoom lens camera, but it also allows focusing very close. I agree with EdH that you need to shoot with the camera parallel to the chip. Done correctly, you won't be able to tell a photo from an image from a scanner. In fact, if you shoot at high resolution, you can bet higher quality than you can with a scanner. Turn off the flash when you take closeups; it won't help at this distance, and digital cameras are fast enough that most any flat room lighting will suffice.
