I can't say I'm really much of a race fan, but I still have a vivid memory of being 14 or 15 years old and having a friend invite me to the drag races in Tulsa, OK. His parents bought us pit passes and we watched Big Daddy Don Garlits exceed 200mph which was a big deal at the time.
