Trivia: I have often been asked why the pound is abbreviated with an "L" as there is no "L" in the word pound. The abbreviation comes from the Latin word Libra, yes the same as the zodiac symbol holding the scales. Libra in Latin means weight and the British currency (and others) were based on a weight of a precious metal.
